PURPOSE:To obtain a satisfactory catalyst exhibiting high activity at the time of synthesizing ammonia with a ruthenium catalyst by incorporating ruthenium and an element such as an alkali metal and keeping these components under coexistence with Fullerene. CONSTITUTION:This ammonia synthesis catalyst is applied to the synthesis of ammonia from nitrogen and hydrogen, contains ruthenium as a 1st component and one or more kinds of elements selected from among alkali metals, alkaline earth metals and rare earth elements as a 2nd component and keeps these components under coexistence with Fullerene. This Fullerene is a macromolecule of carbon and C60 or C70 is, e.g. used because it is easily available. The Fullerene prevents electron withdrawing groups from depriving the ruthenium of its electrons, effectively transfers electrons given by oxide of the 2nd component added as an accelerator to the top of the ruthenium and enhances the activity of this catalyst. |
