摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suitably keep an engine operational state in changing a valve characteristic, in an internal combustion engine in which valve characteristics of intake valve and an exhaust valve can be changed. SOLUTION: One of a master-slave valve timing control and an independent valve timing control is selected. In the master-slave control, a target displacement angle INP is calculated as a displacement angle of an optimal intake camshaft 22 depending on the engine operational state, and an actual displacement angle INR of the intake camshaft 22 is brought close to the target displacement angle INP. Further, a target displacement angle EXR of the exhaust camshaft 23 is calculated based on a target valve overlap amount OVP calculated as an optimal valve overlap amount depending on the engine operational state and the actual displacement angle INR, and the actual displacement angle EXR of the exhaust camshaft 23 is brought close to the target displacement angle EXR. On the other hand, in the independent control, the target displacement angles INP, EXP are calculated as optimal valves depending on the engine operational status, the actual displacement angles INR, EXR are brought close to the target displacement angles INP, EXP.
