<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a light-to-light type optical signal pattern discriminating method and an optical signal pattern discriminating device that are extremely small-sized and capable of ultra high-speed operation and EX-OR type fully optical pattern discrimination. <P>SOLUTION: Two optical pulse trains in different polarization states and probe light are made incident on a multiple-quantum well structure plane type optical switch at the same time and only when two optical pulse patterns are different, output of the probe light is obtained. A phase space filtering phenomenon is used for the principle of discrimination of an optical signal pattern. Consequently, the pattern discrimination of an ultra high-speed optical pulse signal becomes possible. This optical signal pattern discriminating device comprises a polarization beam splitter, a λ/4 plate (and -λ/4 plate), a condenser lens, and a multiple-quantum well structure plane type optical switch. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI |
