SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR CASSETTE IDENTIFICATION FOR DRUG PUMP

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a system and method for identifying an attachable fluid cassette for supplying a fluid to a drug pump for pumping the fluid to a patient.

SOLUTION: A pump 20 is provided with a control module 24 and the attachable fluid reservoir cassette 26. The control module includes a pumping mechanism for pumping the fluid from a fluid reservoir to the patient. The cassette is provided with an indicia 40 to identify the difference between a plurality of cassettes. The control module further includes a cassette indicia identification structure 42 for identifying the indicia on the cassette. One type of cassette identification system includes a projection of the cassette and a control module structure engaged with the projection. Another type of cassette identification system includes a light reflecting system. Still other types utilize other non-contact switches or sensors to sense the indicia on the cassette to identify the cassette from the plurality of cassettes.
