The invention relates to a strip coating device for coating of strips, particularly metal strips, having at least one application head for applying coating substances to the strip, whereby the application head has at least one application roller that applies the coating substance to the strip, and havi ng at least one supporting roller disposed on the side of the strip opposite the application head, characterized in that the application head works on the strip optionally either in a first functional position of the strip coating device , in the supporting region of the supporting roller, or, in a second functional position of the strip coating device, in a free strip region outside of the supporting region of the supporting roller.
