PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electrolyte for an aluminum electrolytic capacitor ensuring the compatibility of high conductivity with high spark voltage, and an aluminum electrolytic capacitor using the same. SOLUTION: This electrolyte for an electrolytic capacitor is characterized by containing as an electrolyte, a salt (A) represented by General Formula (1): wherein R<SP>1</SP>to R<SP>4</SP>independently represent at least any one of saturated and unsaturated divalent hydrocarbon groups having 4 to 20 carbon atoms, and R<SP>1</SP>to R<SP>4</SP>may be identical or different from each other, and comprising an onium cation (a), preferably an amidinium cation (a1) and a tetra-substituted borate anion (b).
