The ethyl iodide concentration may be maintained by removing acetaldehyde from the reaction medium and/or by adjusting at least one A) hydrogen partial pressure in the reactor, B) methyl acetate concentration of the reaction medium; and/or C) methyl iodide concentration of the reaction medium.

A process for producing an acetic acid product, comprising the steps of continuously carbonylating methanol with carbon monoxide in a reactor in the presence of water, a metal catalyst, methyl iodide and a halide salt to form a reaction medium, wherein the carbonylating is carried out while maintaining an ethyl iodide concentration in the reaction medium at less than or equal to 750 wppm, and separating the acetic acid product from the reaction medium, wherein the acetic acid product comprises propionic acid in an amount of less than or equal to 250 wppm, wherein the methanol that is introduced into the reactor is a methanol source comprising ethanol in an amount from 1 to 150 wppm.
