A method and apparatus for casting a metal, particularly a chemically active metal such as a Ti-Al alloy. The metal is in a heated melting cell (9) in a chamber (4) filled with a non-reactive gas. The heating is effected quickly by means of an induction coil (7). When the metal is molten it flows rapidly into a mould (3) below the melting cell (9) which is sealed to the mould. The mould is made by the lost wax process and is supported in a chamber (1).
