Recovery of fatty materials having improved purity from aq. emulsions or dispersions comprises separating out the emulsion or dispersion by adding alkyl sulphates of formula R'O-SO3X (I) and then separating the useful substances by known methods. R1 = 6-12C alkyl; and X = alkali metal. USE/ADVANTAGE - The obtd. natural fats and oils are useful for the prepn. of e.g. fatty acid (esters) and surfactants. The fats and oils are obtd. in improved purity and the chemical oxygen consumption of the effluent is reduced.
