A midstream urine collection device 10 essentially comprises a funnel-shaped body 11 defining a urine flow passage 14, with a cup member 20 and cover 26, smaller than the said passage, mounted therein. The generally dome-shaped cover, formed of a non-contaminating, water-soluble polymer and extending over the cup member on arched support struts 27, disintegrates within 2-15 seconds on exposure to urine so that the midstream urine flow can be effectively captured. The main aspect of the invention, however, lies in providing a urine deflecting means 50 for shielding at least an upper portion 26a of the cover from the direct impingement of urine flow. In one embodiment a disc-shaped, imperforate shield 51 is supported by an integral support arm 52 connected to the cover fixing means 29. In another the shield is provided with openings. A further aspect to the invention lies in the fact that the apparatus is made from a water soluble polymer provided with a thin coating of a water insoluble polymer and is therefore flushable after use.
