PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a catalyst having high activity with which the objective conversion can be performed in a small reactor by impregnating a carrier silica with water, drying the carrier silica, depositing a titanium compd. on the dried carrier and then calcining to obtain a titanium-contg. solid catalyst for the production of an oxirane compd. SOLUTION: The silica used is preferably a porous synthetic silica comprising amorphous silica particles, and for example, a silica gel and precipitated silica are used. In the production of the catalyst, the carrier silica is impregnated with water and dried, on which a titanium compd. is deposited. The titanium compd. used is, for example, tetramethyl titanate, tetraethyl titanate. After depositing titanium, the catalyst compsn. is calcined. Namely, the compsn. is heated in a non-reducing gas atmosphere such as a gas containing nitrogen or oxygen. By using the obtd. catalyst, halides or alkanolates are converted into insoluble chemically bonded oxides. |
