An optical module having an optical element and an optical fiber, the package cost of which is reduced and the reliability of which is high. When an optical module is constituted by using a plastic package molded in advance, a molding resin is caused to flow in parallel to the optical axis of the optical fiber to be installed, thus injection-molding the plastic package. When the plastic package is molded in one batch, the direction of flow of the resin is made parallel to the optical axis of the optical fiber to be installed, thus molding the plastic package. When a resin case is used, since the package exhibits a high rigidity and a low thermal expansion in the direction of flow of the resin, the external stress and thermal stress applied to the optical fiber are reduced. Thus, a high reliability is ensured. In the case of one-batch molding, the molding pressure applied to the optical fiber is reduced. Therefore, a high reliability is ensured.
