PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image scanner for performing automatic focal adjustment obtaining high reproducibility and with high precision, and to provide a focal position adjusting method and its program. SOLUTION: Automatic focal adjustment finds a plurality of first sharpness values from the image signal output from an image sensor 111, finds the maximum value from among the plurality of the first sharpness values, extracts the first sharpness value which is a value or larger for multiplying a prescribed rate to the maximum value, finds a second sharpness value from the extracted first sharpness value, and adjusts the focal position on the basis of the second sharpness value.
