An electronic control unit inputs detection values from respective sensors in a step (S12) and determines abnormality in operation of the sensors in a step (S13). In a step (S14), the operation of an electric motor is suspended and transited to an assist stop state, and in a step (S15) a driver is informed of the assist step state. Under such conditions, a detection value from a normal sensor is input in a step (S16), and whether or not the input detection value is at a determination reference value or higher in a step (S17). That is, whether or not the driver can recognize the transition to the assist stop state by a turning operation ofa steering wheel is determined based on the determination.
