#CMT# #/CMT# In a process to join a flange plate (5) to an effluent gas pipe (1), the pipe is secured by a clamp and the flange (5) is presented to the pipe-end (4) and oscillated and pressed against the pipe to generate heat. The heat produces results in a friction weld. Also claimed is a commensurate pipe assembly e.g. exhaust manifold with a number of pipe ends having friction-welded flanges.
