PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a positive electrode active material for a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery, suppressing out flow of transition metal, thereby achieving a target composition and particle size distribution.SOLUTION: A precursor of a positive electrode active material for a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery is nickel cobalt complex hydroxide obtained by a method for producing nickel cobalt complex hydroxide according to the present invention and represented by general formula: NiCoMnM(OH)(where 0<x<1/2, 0≤y<1/2 and 0≤z≤0.1 are satisfied, and M represents one or more elements selected from among Mg, Al, Ca, Ti, V, Cr, Zr, Nb, Mo and W), and has an average particle size D50, as determined by laser scattering particle size distribution measurement, of 4.0-25.0 μm and a specific surface area, as measured by a nitrogen absorption BET method, of 1.0 m/g or more and less than 8.0 m/g. In a method for producing a positive electrode active material for a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery, the precursor is mixed with a lithium compound to be fired at 800-1,000°C. |
