An extender system is configured to couple a vertebral bone anchor that has been previously implanted in a vertebra, or is newly implantable in a vertebra, to an adjacent bone, which can be an additional spinal level or an occiput, for example. The extender system includes an extension member having a body and an engagement member coupled to the body. The extension member defines an aperture extending through the engagement member. A screw is configured to attach the extension member to the vertebral bone anchor. The extension member can be fastened to the adjacent bone. |

1. An extender system configured to be operatively coupled to a vertebral implant that is secured to a vertebra, the vertebral implant including a first bone anchor and a first anchor seat that receives the first bone anchor, the extender system comprising:
an extension member that defines an aperture; a bushing disposed in the aperture; a fastener configured to couple the extension member to the first anchor seat, the fastener defining a distal portion that is configured to threadedly engage the first anchor seat so as to capture a spinal fixation rod disposed within the first anchor seat, and thereby fix the position of the first bone anchor relative to the first anchor seat and the spinal fixation rod; and a second bone anchor configured to attach the extension member to an underlying bone disposed adjacent the vertebra, wherein the extension member is polyaxially pivotable relative to the bushing. |
