Luminescent alumino-silicate and/or alumino-borate glass comprising lanthanum and/or gadolinium and activated by Tb<3><+> and/or Ce<3><+> having a composition comprising 35-85 mol.% of SiO2 and/or B2O3, 1-35 mol% of La2O3 and/or Gd2O3, 5-45 mol% of Al2O3 and 0.5-30 mol% of Tb2O3 and/or Ce2O3. The La2O3 and/or Gd2O3 may be replaced up to not more than 50 mol% by Y2O3, Sc2O3, Lu2O3 ZrO2, P2O5 and/or alka line earth metal oxides. The luminescent glass can be used in a luminescent screen, for example, the luminescent screen of a low-pressure mercury vapour discharge lamp.
