The invention relates to a process for the treatment of combustible gas that is produced from spent liquor from alkaline cellulose processes, especially from sulphate boiling, and which is suitable for energy production. In the process the combustible gas is brought into contact with certain calcium compounds at high temperature, there being a significant reduction in the quantity of sulphur constituents in the gas and, to a certain extent, calcining of the calcium carbonate necessary for recovery of the boiling chemicals. Conversion of the sulphur that is removed from the gas to active boiling chemical occurs in conjunction with normal causticizing.
