PURPOSE:To obtain a new indole compound useful as an in vivo antioxidant, an ultraviolet damage inhibitor, etc., and applicable to a beverage, a cosmetic, a medicine, etc. CONSTITUTION:An indole compound represented by formula I, II, III, IV, V or VI. The indole compounds of formula I to VI can be readily produced by extracting a sea weed belonging to Delesseriaceae with water or an organic solvent and subsequently applying an isolation treatment thereto according to the chromatography method, etc. The new indole compound has an inhibitory effect on peroxidation of a lipid of a biomembrane caused by a chemical substance or ultraviolet rays. In addition, this compound is safe to the human body since its toxicity is remarkably low. |
