The magnetic layer depositing device has an extrusion nozzle (1) for placing a magnetic material on a substrate (19) continuously passing past the nozzle. The device has also a smoothing element (12,12A,13) to smooth the magnetic material, which is still damp, using the effects of a magnetic field. The device uses a strip structure composed of several magnets (15), each having alternate north and south poles in the direction of the moving substrate, which acts as the smoothing element. This smoothing element is placed on the opposite side of the substrate to the side being covered, in a plane nearly parallel to the substrate (19) but in an inclined direction, which is at plus or minus 45 to 85 degrees to the moving direction of the substrate..
