PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an escalator and its operation method capable of enabling a passenger who is on a top face of a step to get off the step safely and with comfort upon the step reaching an exit of an escalator, or upon a step reaching the entrance of the escalator, to enable a passenger who is on the top face of a footboard to safely and comfortably step onto the step. SOLUTION: The escalator is equipped with a plurality of the steps 12, endless guide rails 10 for guiding each of the steps 12, and the footboard 11 provided at the entrance/exit of a hoistway. The guide rail 10 has: a high level rail portion 10a for guiding the steps 12 so that the level of the top face of the steps 12 becomes higher than the level of the top face of the footboard 11; an inclining rail portion 10b which inclines upward or downward along the forward direction of the steps 12; and a low level rail portion 10c for guiding the steps 12 so that the level of the top face of the steps 12 becomes lower than the top face of the footboard 11.
