A composition for preventing or treating cardiovascular diseases is provided to prevent or treat hyperlipidemia, coronary artery heart disease, atherosclerosis and myocardial infarction caused by oxidation of LDL or synthesis and accumulation of cholesteryl esters. A composition for preventing or treating cardiovascular diseases comprises dihydroguaiaretic acid, a lignan compound represented by the following formula 1, as an active ingredient. The compound is obtained by extraction and isolation from Houttuynia cordata thunb. Particularly, the method for preparing the compound represented by formula 1 comprises the steps of: crushing dried Houttuynia cordata thunb., and extracting the crushed product with a solvent; adding water to the extract of the preceding step and fractioning the water suspension sequentially with n-hexane, chloroform and ethyl acetate to obtain a soluble extract; and separating and purifying the soluble extract.
