PURPOSE:To enhance durability for a hydraulic frictional engagement means by performing control in such a way that input torque to an automatic transmission is lowered when a specified operation for gear shifting to a designated position is detected, and when it is judged that the aforesaid gear shifting has been in a range of gear shifting restrictions. CONSTITUTION:The automatic transmission 14 for five forward speeds and reverse, which is equipped with a torque converter 12, and with a first and a second transmission 3O and 32, wherein speed change mechanism for second speed and third speed is formed into a clutch-to-clutch transmission section where the engagement of a brake 2, and a brake 3 are released while being overlapped. In the automatic transmission 14 as mentioned above, when the operation of a shift lever to a third speed gear position is detected, it is judged whether or not gear shifting to a third gear step is in a range of gear shifting restrictions. And when the answer of the judgement is 'YES', the input torque of the automatic transmission is so constituted as to be lowered down for the period of shifting from second speed to third speed. By this constitution, the duration of the brake B3, which is actuated in order to allow a third speed step to be established, is restrained from being degraded. |
