<p>In a long distance, optical, Soliton pulse-type numerical signal transmission system, distortion of the transmitted Soliton pulses is minimised by counteracting pulse jitter with a phase modulator (21) and counteracting pulse signal/noise (S/N) ratio change with an assembly of filters (221-22n), having frequencies which vary with filter position, or an assembly of saturable absorber elements. The phase modulator may be of electric absorption modulation type, including a semiconductor component such as a quaternary compound of InxGa1-xAsyP1-y type, and each saturable absorber element (if used) is preferably of semiconductor type, especially of a quaternary compound such as InxGa1-xAsyP1-y.</p> |
