Method and apparatus for the manufacture of textiles

A method of imparting a desired design or random pattern to a finished fabric comprises moving the impact point of an energy beam. eg. a laser beam 14 with respect to the fabric 2 to either change the visual appearance of the surface of the fabric or to cut holes in it of a predetermined shape and at predetermined relative positions. The method operates under the control of a microprocessor which is included in the apparatus. The energy beam may alternatively be ultrasound.
