This method is for selecting the nature and/or form of an alert used to announce a call made by a user participating in a customised alert service. The alert service configuration for the participating user is stored on one or more network accessible devices (18) providing the necessary information for the alert descriptor. A participating user (10) operates a first communications terminal (14) to make a call to a second communications terminal (22), this call being supported by the first's communications service (24), an alert descriptor from the customised alert service configuration is then identified for the particular participating user. The second communications terminal then fetches the chosen alert descriptor from a remotely connected network device (18) and announces the call by activating an alert using the chosen alert descriptor.
