An apparatus and a method for synthesizing images in a portable terminal are provided to acquire a photograph in which an object image is accurately matched with a background image through one photographing operation even though generating the shake of hand or the movement of object. An object is photographed when a photographing key is input by using a background image(501). The contours of the background image and an object image are extracted(507). The two images are synthesized with each other such that the contours are synchronized with each other. The synthesized image is corrected according to an image correction key if the image correction key is input(513). The image correction key is used to allow an image to move leftward, rightward, upward, and downward or to enlarge or downscale the image(515).
