A dual mode power train for a hybrid electric vehicle and its operating method are provided to operate a power train in a high performance state due to change of a transmission ratio. A dual mode power train for a hybrid electric vehicle comprises: a first planetary gear set(9) including a first carrier(3) connected with an engine(1), a first sun gear(5) and a first ring gear(7), a second planetary gear set(21) including a second ring gear(11) connected with the first sun gear, a second carrier(15) connected with the first ring gear and a driving wheel(13), and a second sun gear(19) connected with a second motor generator(17), a third planetary gear set(31) including a third sun gear(23) connected with the second ring gear, a third carrier(27) connected with a first motor generator(25) and a third ring gear(29), a first clutch(33) installed to connect and disconnect the second sun gear of the second planetary gear set with the third ring gear of the third planetary gear set, and a second clutch(35) installed to convert into a fixed state and a rotatable state of the third ring gear of the third planetary gear set.
