PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing metal nanoparticles including rod-shaped nanoparticles, which can control the shape of the metal nanoparticles to the rod shape by mixing a primary amine or a secondary amine at an appropriate ratio without using an additional apparatus, and further can control the size of the metal nanoparticles to several nanometers. SOLUTION: The method for producing the metal nanoparticles including the rod-shaped nanoparticles comprises the steps of: heating a mixture of an amine compound containing the secondary amine, a metallic precursor and a non-polar solvent to a temperature of 60 to 300°C to form such an intermediate of nanoparticles of a metal oxide as to include at least rod-shaped nanoparticles; adding a capping molecule and a reducing agent to the mixture and heating the resultant mixture to a temperature of 90 to 150°C to form the metal nanoparticles; and recovering the metal nanoparticles.
