A special mode processor drives a display panel to display an image. When the display panel is configured to operate in a special operation mode, the special operation mode processor determines a pixel block size for blocking the plurality of pixels into a plurality of pixel blocks and determines a first set of on-pixels and a first set of off-pixels. The first set of on-pixels is initially turned on and the first set of off-pixels is initially turned off. A drive history representative value is generated for the first group of pixels that represents a drive time and drive characteristic for the first group of pixels. The drive history representative value is compared with a threshold value. Responsive to the drive history representative value exceeding the threshold value, a second set of on-pixels and a second set of off-pixels are turned on and off respectively.

1. A method for driving a display panel to display an image, the method comprising:
configuring the display panel to operate in a special operation mode, the display panel comprising a plurality of pixels; determining, by a special operation mode processor, a pixel block size for blocking the plurality of pixels into a plurality of pixel blocks and determining a first set of on-pixels and an first set of off-pixels, the first set of on-pixels including at least a first group of pixels comprising at least one pixel in each of the plurality of pixel blocks and the first set of off-pixels including at least a second group of pixels comprising at least one pixel in each of the plurality of blocks; turning on the first set of on-pixels and turning off the first set of off-pixels; generating a drive history representative value for the first group of pixels, the drive history representative value representing a drive time and drive characteristic for the first group of pixels; comparing the drive history representative value with a threshold value; responsive to the drive history representative value exceeding the threshold value, determining a second set of on-pixels and a second set of off-pixels, the second set of on-pixels including at least the second group of pixels and the second set of off-pixels including at least the first group of pixels; and turning on the second set of on-pixels and turning off the second set of off-pixels.
