PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rubber composition for a base tread capable of improving low fuel consumption properties, abrasion resistance and workability in a good balance, and to provide a pneumatic tire using the same.SOLUTION: A rubber composition for a base tread contains a rubber constituent and silica, the content of a conjugated diene polymer having a constitutional unit based on a conjugated diene and a constitutional unit based on a compound represented by the formula (1) is 5 mass% or more in 100 mass% of the rubber constituent, and the content of the silica is 5 to 150 pts.mass based on 100 pts.mass of the rubber constituent.
