An object of the present invention is to provide a modifying agent with which a film having a phase retardation that does not vary significantly due to variations in humidity and being highly transparent and suitable for optical applications can be produced, a resin composition including the modifying agent, an optical film produced using the composition, and a liquid crystal display apparatus including the optical film. Provided is a cellulose-ester-resin-modifying agent including a polyester resin (A) having a backbone skeleton including a structure represented by General Formula (1):;(where R1 to R22 each represent a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group having 1 to 6 carbon atoms, a cycloalkyl group, or an aromatic group having 6 to 10 carbon atoms).
