PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce vulcanized fiber from cotton rag pulp, in which the obtained vulcanized fiber is strong, and the shrinking of the sizes (especially, in width direction) during the process is suppressed to the utmost. SOLUTION: The lowering in the viscosity of cotton rag pulp is mainly carried out by cooking with caustic soda, and pulp whose viscosity level is adjusted at 8.8-13.4 cPs, preferably 11±1 cPs expressed in terms of 0.5% CED method is obtained.
