The present invention is an in-line, horizontally oriented, drainpipe heat exchanger for use in buildings comprising a large diameter tubular copper element and a small diameter copper cold water tube coiled on the outside. The heat exchanger replaces a section of drainpipe and has three primary components: a tubular copper element that comprises a first, large hemicylinder copper tube upper portion connect ed at each end to the drainpipe; a second, large inverted hemicylinder heat conductor, the two hemicylinders together forming a cylinder with maximum thermal contact therebetween; and a smaller diameter cold water copper tube coiled tightly around most of the length of the cylinder.
