A method and architecture for acquiring and processing broadcast or satellite signals is disclosed. The method and apparatus comprise a variable attenuator and a AGC controlled amplifier. The variable amplifier is operative in response to a control signal, wherein the control signal is determined by a signal lock condition of said signal for a plurality of attenuator settings. This acquisition system can be used to detect signal presence and generate channel lists.
