An isolated Treponema pallidum protein for use in an assay to detect the presence of Treponema pallidum in a sample, characterised in that the protein is reduced and/or denatured. Also disclosed is a reduced and/or denatured T. pallidum protein conjugate, methods of making a reduced and/or denaturedT. pallidum protein and T. pallidum protein conjugates, use of same, a kit comprising same for the detection of T. pallidum in a sample, and a method of detecting T. pallidum in a sample.
