A vacuum suspension system (110) includes a pump system (112) arranged to be in fluid communication with a prosthetic socket (114). The pump system (112) includes a pump mechanism (126) having a housing (148) and a membrane (152) situated on the housing (148) such that a fluid chamber (158) is defined between the membrane (152) and the housing (148). The pump mechanism (126) is movable between an original configuration in which the volume of the fluid chamber (158) is zero or near-zero, and an expanded configuration in which the volume of the fluid chamber (158) is increased.
