A method for controlling undesired weed growth in the presence of crop in a soil, the method comprising the steps of applying to the locusts of the undesired plant growth a herbicidally effective amount of a solution of ammonium lignosulfonate. The ammonium lignosulfonate also acts as a mulch to reduce wind erosion and also increases the soil temperature.
