PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a decoding method and a decoding apparatus for securely decoding within a short time by automatically identifying a coding method even when a signal coded by an unknown coding method is received. SOLUTION: The decoding method comprises the steps of extracting arbitrary n bits (n is arbitrary natural number of not less than 2) sufficiently long relating to an input signal by a codec identification device 1, taking distribution from features of each codec relating to coded data of the n bits (counting the frequency of appearance in every 4 bits for ADPCM, counting the frequency of appearance of each bit by classifying in every 10 (80) bits for CELP, etc.), automatically identifying the coding method (codec) by recognizing the feature of its distribution, and controlling each of switches 2, 8 in response to its identification result.
