Compressing borehole image data by acquiring image data downhole, selecting a block of the image data to compress, applying at least one filter to the block, selecting a subset of pixels from the block, and quantizing each of the subset of pixels. Also described is compressing borehole image data by acquiring downhole image data, the image data including discrete traces where each trace includes a plurality of borehole parameter values; selecting a block of image data to compress, the block including a first set of the traces; buffering the block in the time domain with a set of traces, the second set including at least one different trace; and, compressing the block. Also, compressing borehole image data by acquiring downhole image data, the image data including discrete traces where each trace includes a plurality of borehole parameter values; selecting a block of image data to compress, the block including a plurality of traces; processing each of the traces to determine corresponding tool faces at which each of the traces is most even; and, processing the corresponding tool faces about which each of the traces is most even to determine a tool dace about which the block is most even. |
