<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an exhaust emission control device for an internal combustion engine capable of improving NOx conversion performance. <P>SOLUTION: The exhaust emission control device provided in an exhaust gas passage of the internal combustion engine is provided with an NOx retainer, a three way catalyst arranged in a path through which NOx desorbed from the NOx retainer flows, an ozone adsorbent arranged in an upstream of the NOx retainer and adsorbing ozone, and a first ozone introduction means introducing ozone to the ozone adsorbent.
