A mechanical actuator mechanism for use in a refuse cabinet comprises a door mounting bracket and an upper cabinet mounting bracket pivotally connected one to the other. A main lever arm is pivotal about a lever pivot axis between a rest position and an actuating position. An elongate link arm is connected to the door mounting bracket and the main lever arm. An actuator pedal is mounted on the lower cabinet mounting bracket and connected to the main lever arm. Downward movement of the actuator pedal from its raised rest position to its lowered door actuating position causes the main lever arm to pivotally move from its rest position to the actuating position, thus causing upward movement of the elongate link arm, which correspondingly causes the door mounting bracket to move from its lower position to its raised position, thus opening the door.
