The invention relates to a method of generating synthetic seismograms 134 for use in assessing an oilfield subterranean formation. The method involves the steps of obtaining Vertical Seismic Profile (VSP) data 100, generating a VSP Derived Impedance Log (VDIL) from said VSP data, modifying 132 impedance values of the VDIL for the modelling of particular properties in order to create a modified VDIL, and generating an improved Synthetic Seismogram from the modified VDIL. The method may further comprise filtering the maximum resolution VSP reflectivity log down toward the adjacent surface seismic bandwidth prior to inverting to impedance and creating a synthetic seismogram. It may further comprise calculating the amount of dip in selected layers in the formation from the VSP data and correcting the VDIL to account for dip in order to generate a dip corrected VDIL. |
