<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus that minimizes light fatigue of an image carrier and excels in longevity and stability while preventing image defects, and to provide a process cartridge used for the image forming apparatus. <P>SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus 100 includes the image carrier 40 on which an electrostatic latent image is formed, and a discharging means 72 which removes electric charges from the image carrier 40 by means of light, wherein a quantity of discharging light during an image forming operation and a quantity of discharging light during processing after the image forming are varied.
