<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To control white balance without degrading the contrast of a projected image. <P>SOLUTION: The light from a light source apparatus 21 is divided into three colors by a light splitting optical system 12 and made to enter respective liquid crystal light valves 25a to 25c. Each liquid crystal light valve 25a to 25c is modulated by an external image signal to generate two-dimensional distribution of the refractive index to modulate the illumination light. The image light modulated by each liquid crystal light valve 25a to 25c is synthesized by a cross dichroic prism 27 and enters a projection lens 29. In the system, as a half-wave (λ/2) plate 23d is disposed to convert the G light entering a second dichroic mirror 23b and the B light entering a third dichroic mirror 23c into P polarized light, the white balance can be adjusted by appropriately attenuating the G and R light while keeping the intensity of the R light. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI |
