The manually actuated tongs are used for street cleaning purposes and by infirm persons for picking up dropped items. The picking up arrangement has two jaws, the first (3) held on the guide tube (2). This jaw acts as a shovel and it has a top groove. The pivoted second jaw (4) has gripping teeth (4d) and both jaws have smooth rounded ends. The pivoted jaw is actuated by a sliding rod within the tubular handle. The pivoted jaw has an actuating arm with a sloping slot to which is connected the actuating bracket (6) which is in turn connected to the actuating rod within the tubular handle. This rod is spring loaded and it can be actuated directly by a handle or indirectly by a lever arrangement at the upper end of the handle.
