PURPOSE: To provide a hydrogen and oxygen generator capable of being operated at a high pressure without the sealing function being deteriorated even in the high-pressure operation, without leaking oxygen, hydrogen, water, etc., into the atmosphere from a gasket, developing only a small differential pressure between the anode side and cathode side even in the start-up of the generator and with the breakage of a solid electrolyte reduced. CONSTITUTION: A solid electrolyte membrane unit consists of a solid electrolyte membrane 10, porous feeders 20 attached to both ends of the membrane 10, and a bipolar electrode plate 30 provided outside both the porous feeders 20 and acting as an anode and a cathode. The plural units 40 are laminated to constitute a bipolar water electrolytic cell 2, the electrolytic cell 2 is placed in a cylindrical vessel 90, a gasket 70 provided between the solid electrolyte membrane 10 and an electrode plate 30, and clamping of the membrane 10 is formed with a flexible member to attache the outer periphery of the gasket 70 firmly to the inner face of a vessel, thus a sealing structure is formed in this hydrogen and oxygen generator. |
