An electric barbecue gill which enables a 2400 Watt or smaller electric heating element (34) to provide cooking temperatures of at least 500 DEG F on a food (14) bearing grill (33) of area 200 square inches or more. The grill has an electric heating element (34) and multilayer metal sheet inserts (38, 39) shaped to reflect radiation from the heating element (34) to impinge on the food (14) present on the grill (33) surfaces. The multilayer metal sheet inserts (38, 39) are preferably metal foil layers (12) providing maximum insulation and heat containment to increase the efficiency of the limited heat available from the electric heating element (34) of a grill.
