PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide polyimide-based varnish capable of forming an alignment layer having particularly high uniaxial orientability, an alignment layer formed by using the varnish, and an IPS type liquid crystal display element of high contrast and high viewing angle. SOLUTION: The IPS type liquid crystal display element is the polyimide-based varnish forming the alignment layer for the liquid crystal display element of the horizontal electric field system (IPS type) to perform display by dominant formation of parallel electric fields to the surface of a substrate and has the alignment layer. The alignment layer is prepared by preparing the polyimide-based varnish formable at≥1.3 in the orientation indexΔexpressed by formula (1) and is formed by using the varnish.
